Sunday in the City | 3 & 4

Of course I am late on these because when can I ever be a diligent blogger for longer than two weeks at a time.  These last weeks have been equally as wonderful as the first two.

I am enjoying people watching on the subway and listening to the talented street performers on the platforms.  I did some apartment hunting with my cousin Devan and we found an amazing 4 bedroom WITH A BACKYARD, so we will be signing the lease for that this week! 

I was able to visit with a good friend Patrick Smith, who was up from Florida for Governor's Ball and up to his neck in photo shoots everyday.  We visited the Swoon and Ai Wei Wei exhibits at the Brooklyn Museum (I couldn't stay away too long, and it was just as amazing the second time around!) and explored down by NYU searching (unsuccessfully) for some hidden bar. 

I'm very excited to get myself a desk for my new place so that I can set up all of my studio knick-knacks (okay, almost all of them) and get to work.  So many ideas buzzing about in my head... Just waiting for the rest of my art supplies to get here!

Sunday in the City | 2

This first week has just flown by! I am settling in at my job and everyone seems really nice.

This weekend I went to Brooklyn to visit my cousin and did some exploring there. Went to a barbecue in Bushwick, then to brunch at Tandem and the Brooklyn Museum today for the Ai Wei Wei exhibit.  The chair and table pieces are amazing every single time I see them!

And surprise! There was also a giant Swoon installation that was just mind-blowing.  I've only seen her wheat paste work (there was one around the corner from my house in Tallahassee when she came for an artist talk), but the addition of paper cuts, two ships (that she actually floated down the Hudson in!) and a SEVETY-FOOT TALL tree made from hand-dyed fabrics was so, so magical.  I would just die if I ever ran into her on the New York streets. Now I've got the itch for some collaging and paper cutting...

Sunday in the City | 1

If you haven't been following me on Facebook, you will be surprised to find out that I packed up my little art room in little Tallahassee and moved myself up to the big city - NYC!  Yes, of course I have only been here for five hours, but I'm already feeling renewed inspiration in my bones.

I used to blog about both my art and my personal growth as an artist, but that slowly faded in my later years of undergrad after being bogged down with extensive projects, and we all know the blocks that I've been having this past year making new and exciting pieces that mean something.  I think that this transition in my life needs to be documented (and my aunt has been pushing me to blog a bit more), so I'm going to try to sit down each Sunday and figure out everything that I've learned about myself, art and this great city that I'm now a part of.

So for today, it was a lot of traveling.  A long layover in Milwaukee reflecting alone at an airport Chili's to a lost bag that made the trip all the way to San Fransisco.  My uncle picked me up from LaGuardia and we did a quick tour (several detours actually, due to a malfunctioning Garmin) of Bushwick and had dinner at a lovely hole-in-the-wall Italian restaurant (the first of many hole-in-the-walls to come, I'm sure).  A drive through Times Square led to one of my fave rappers getting out of the taxis in front of us (SAMMY ADAMS) and we landed in the Upper West Side at the apartment I'll be staying at until I find a permanent location later this summer.  It reminds me of the Princess House and is nice and cozy, filled with colorful art that reminds me of pieces the Jealous Curator would love, and two cute kitties that I will make love me. 

I can't wait to get up and explore tomorrow.  And that's something I haven't said in a really long time.

Successful Show!

This post is extremely overdue and I know that I need to start updating this blog more.  My October show and sale at Cello's Charhouse in Safety Harbor was a huge success. I had a wonderful time meeting everyone and seeing old family and friends. 

Thieves

This is a collage that I made for my sister back in August.  We hit the jackpot in Sarasota snagging a 6-point deer skull and a pair of antlers from an architectural salvage store for ten dollars a pop.  She spent a week cleaning them and set them in the backyard to dry, and then they were stolen!  So, I thought she deserved a little pick-me-up.

I've been out of the game for so long.  Post-graduation freedom and working a ton.  Here's something I had been working on.  I had been feeling a little down not creating anything.  Sometimes you just need a $7 piece of paper to get inspired.

Cocoon Spotlight

I  never shared any detail shots of the singular pieces from Colony, but these are some of my favorites.  They were from the soda kiln fall semester that Kim, Michelle, and I were in charge of.  They are made from Zela, Aurora, and Helios porcelain- fired to cone 10 with flashing slips and such.  My little treasures.  They deserve a shout out.
